However, there is a certain way to give the consequence and a certain way for the child to learn their lesson. Also, one thing to consider is why the child lies. The consequences also have to be clear and focused on what the real problem was and why she did what she did. The child may be wrong and will have to learn their lesson but there Is a way to do It too.Firstly, a consequence is something that follows naturally from a persons action, inaction or or decision. It differs from a punishment in that a punishment is retribution. Punishment is getting back at someone, to hurt him or her back for a hurt they did. When you get a speeding ticket, its not a retribution for something you did wrong. Its a consequence of your poor choices and decisions. When youre giving a child a consequence, Its Important to make it flow naturally from the childs choice or action. For example.If your son sleeps late and doesnt get up for school, the natural consequence is to go to bed earlier that night to get more sleep. The natural ensconce isnt to take his phone for a week. Tell him he has to go to bed early for the next three nights, and then if he can show you he can get up for school, youll go back to the later bedtime. Its also important to make the consequence task-oriented, not time-oriented. A time-oriented consequence Is when you tell your child hes grounded for a week or cant use his cell phone for two weeks.Its Ineffective because all It does Is teach kids how to do time. It does not teach them how to change their behavior. Making your daughter stay in for three weekends wont teach her to observe curfew. It Just puts you and your family through grief and the child learns nothing. A task-oriented consequence is related to the offense and defines a learning objective. If your child stayed out past curfew last week, this weekend, she has to come In an hour earlier to show you that she can do It. When she shows you she can do It, you can go back to her normal curfew time.Making her stay in for three weekends wont teach her to observe curfew. It Just puts you and your family through the grief and the child learns nothing. The best consequences are those from which the child learns something. If your son is disrespectful to his sister, a good consequence is to tell him he cant use the phone until he writes her a letter of apology. That way, hes not Just doing time. Hes completing an act that teaches him something. I think parents have to be very clear about consequences, especially the older kids get. These times are probably associated with tests or papers. We can also recall what study habits we used to help decrease the anxiety. There are several different ways to learn. Everybody has their favorite study habits. After taking the VARK assessment tool, my preferred learning style was determined. My preferred learning style was a combination of kinesthetic and reading and writing. A reading and writing learner is the â€Å"typical† student learner. They learn by reading and taking notes. They take detailed notes and read those notes over and over until they understand the material. Kinesthetic learning â€Å"uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown in pictures and on screens.† (VARK) These type of learners like to move around a lot while they are learning. They do not do well sitting still. This type learns well through experiencing things. This type of learner does well in science classes that have labs associated with them. There several learning strategies that help me learn best. I like to take detailed notes and read over them several times until I am comfortable with what I’m learning. I like to read the textbook material several times if needed to understand the material. I have to have a quiet environment when I am studying or writing a paper. One of my preferred strategies for kinesthetic learning are hands on activities. I learn better if I can try the activity. I use color coded index cards when I take notes. This makes it easier to organize ideas and thoughts. I use lots of examples and stories when I give a presentation. This makes the presentation more realistic to the people in the audience. The use of graphs and charts make learning more enjoyable for me. I like to see the information in the graphs or charts. It makes it easier to understand. I like to take classes that have labs or hands on por tions. I really enjoy science classes that is my favorite subject. I like the challenge of trying to growing specimens in chemistry or dissecting animals in biology. The textbook definition of a read and write learner is â€Å"this preference uses the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information.† (VARK) This learning style has several different strategies that I do not partake in. I take very detailed notes. However I do not rewrite or use bullet points in my notes. I don’t write my notes in full paragraph. I write them in sentences or I sometimes paraphrase them if there are lot of notes to take. I do like to write notes on index cards, but I write sentences instead of key words. I do not like to sit in the front of the class. I like to sit in the back. Instead of skimming though the material to locate the main idea, I like to read through the whole section to understand the main idea. When a teacher begins the school year they have a new group of students that they have to teach. They have to get to each and every student. They have to learn how each student learns, and if there are any obstacles that the student might have. Comparing The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy and Turned by Charlotte Perkins Gilman This essay is aimed at discussing the differences between two short stories, called ‘The Withered Arm’ by Thomas Hardy and ‘Turned’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These stories have similar plots and both deliver and contrast these in their very own clever ways. They are both based on the idea of triangular relationships, involving two women and a man. In the story ‘Turned’ there is a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Marroner, and their employee who is a young and beautiful Swedish maid who goes by the name of Gerta. In ‘The Withered Arm’ the relationship is between a lady called Rhoda Brook and a farmer called Farmer Lodge and his wife who is called Gertrude. This essay will discuss the similarities and differences between the two stories and their characters, I will also discuss the language used, and the way the same image is effectively conveyed in the two stories. The author of ‘Turned’ is Charlotte Perkins Gilman who was from a poor background and was born in Connecticut, USA, in 1860. The first story she wrote was called ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ which she wrote in 1892. She then went on to write her best-known book, which was called ‘Women and Economics.’ Gilman was a feminist writer who believed that women had the right to their own independence. This is demonstrated in the character of Marion in ‘Turned’, as she is a clever woman with a degree and has a title of doctor. Gilman published ‘Turned’ in 1911 at the time where issues surrounding women rights was becoming more serious and common. On the other hand, Thomas Hardy wrote his novel ‘The Withered Arm’ with men in the powerful positions. For instance Farmer Lodg... ...ld and frail and died and Farmer Lodge became a kind, caring and thoughtful man! Gertrude died three days later in the town â€Å"Her blood had been turned indeed, too far.† After this Rhoda had lost her friend and her son so she decided to resume where she had started where â€Å"Her monotonous milking at the dairy was resumed.† Farmer Lodge on the third corner of this triangular relationship gave up his farms and became a member of the parish after he overcame his remorse and moodiness. â€Å"He eventually changed for the better, and appeared as a chastened and thoughtful man† To conclude this essay, triangular relationships happen and probably always will happen for years to come. It doesn’t make any difference about what century it happens in or if it is from a rich or poor background because affairs, unwanted babies and complicated relationships are part of life.

Ben McAllister English 190 10/4/2010 In Henry Adam’s â€Å"The Dynamo and the Virgin,† he starts to speculate about Christianity’s strength during the medieval times and how it can be related to the twentieth century energy, using the dynamos, that produced electricity. He says when he relates religion and energy,† As he grew accustomed to the gallery of machines, he began to feel the forty-foot dynamos as a moral force, much as the early Christians felt the Cross. By doing this he is explaining he believes the relation between the machines and their parts are just like the Christians being part of the Cathedral and their faith. Therefore, after his relation is given between faith and science, decides he is going to combine the two in his studies, and everything that is considered irrational, he would say it takes faith to believe. He goes on to say how there could never be an American Virgin, since we relate that to sin. As he gets older, continues to sear ch for reasons why the Virgin is still lost in our culture, and he explains it has always been there.He says the Virgin is a force that shaped our Western Civilization, but we had to find her.
