Quotes from I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, a famous book by Maya Angelou, is the first in a series of seven autobiographical novels. The book has been popular since it was first published in 1969. Oprah Winfrey, who read the novel when she was 15, said in a forward to the 2015 edition of the book, ... here was a story that finally spoke to the heart of me. These quotes show the searing journey Angelou traveled transforming from a victim of rape and racism into a self-possessed, dignified young woman.   Racism In the book, Angelous character, Maya, confronts the insidious effects of racism and segregation in America at a very young age, according to SparkNotes. Racism and bigotry are major themes in the novel, as the following quotes make clear. If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat. - PrefaceI remember never believing that whites were really real. - Chapter 4They dont really hate us. They dont know us. How can they hate us?  - Chapter 25How maddening it was to have been born in a cotton field with aspirations of grandeur.  - Chapter 30 Religion and Morality Angelou—and her protagonist in the novel, Maya—was raised with a strong sense of religion, which serves as her moral guide, according to GradeSaver. And that sense of religion and morality permeate the novel. I knew that if a person truly wanted to avoid hell and brimstone, and being roasted forever in the devils fire, all she had to do was memorize Deuteronomy and follow its teaching, word for word. - Chapter 6See, you dont have to think about doing the right thing. If youre for the right thing, then you do it without thinking.  - Chapter 36 Language and Knowledge The description on the back cover of the 2015 edition of the novel, notes that the book captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make things right. Probably more than anything, it is the power of Angelous words—and her emphasis on understanding—that helped to shine a light on the harsh realities of bigotry and racism. Language is mans way of communicating with his fellow man and it is language alone that separates him from the lower animals. - Chapter 15All knowledge is spendable currency, depending on the market.  - Chapter 28 Perseverance The novel covers the years from when Maya is 3 until she turns 15. Much of the book is about Mayas attempt to face bigotry and degradation. Finally, though, near the end of the novel she also sees the honor in surrendering—giving in—when necessary. Like most children, I thought if I could face the worst danger voluntarily, and triumph, I would forever have power over it.  - Chapter 2We are the victims of the worlds most comprehensive robbery. Life demands a balance. Its all right if we do a little robbing now.  - Chapter 29At fifteen life had taught me undeniably that surrender, in its place, was as honorable as resistance, especially if one had no choice.  - Chapter 31 Fitting In In a parable for the novel—and the world around her—Maya wanders around town one night and decides to sleep in a car in a junkyard. The next morning she awakes to find a group of teenagers, composed of many races, living in the junkyard, where they get along well and are all good friends. I was never again to sense myself to solidly outside the pale of the human race. - Chapter 32 Sources Angelou, Maya, and Oprah Winfrey. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Ballantine Books, 2015. Breaking the Rules and Lying Lessons Learned All Around free essay sample

Lessons Learned All Around Lessons Several factors come into play when a child lies or breaks the rules. There are also several consequences to be given. However, there is a certain way to give the consequence and a certain way for the child to learn their lesson. Also, one thing to consider is why the child lies. The consequences also have to be clear and focused on what the real problem was and why she did what she did. The child may be wrong and will have to learn their lesson but there Is a way to do It too.Firstly, a consequence is something that follows naturally from a persons action, inaction or or decision. It differs from a punishment in that a punishment is retribution. Punishment is getting back at someone, to hurt him or her back for a hurt they did. When you get a speeding ticket, its not a retribution for something you did wrong. Its a consequence of your poor choices and decisions. When youre giving a child a consequence, Its Important to make it flow naturally from the childs choice or action. For example. If your son sleeps late and doesnt get up for school, the natural consequence is to go to bed earlier that night to get more sleep. The natural ensconce isnt to take his phone for a week. Tell him he has to go to bed early for the next three nights, and then if he can show you he can get up for school, youll go back to the later bedtime. Its also important to make the consequence task-oriented, not time-oriented. A time-oriented consequence Is when you tell your child hes grounded for a week or cant use his cell phone for two weeks. Its Ineffective because all It does Is teach kids how to do time. It does not teach them how to change their behavior. Making your daughter stay in for three weekends wont teach her to observe curfew. It Just puts you and your family through grief and the child learns nothing. A task-oriented consequence is related to the offense and defines a learning objective. If your child stayed out past curfew last week, this weekend, she has to come In an hour earlier to show you that she can do It. When she shows you she can do It, you can go back to her normal curfew time.Making her stay in for three weekends wont teach her to observe curfew. It Just puts you and your family through the grief and the child learns nothing. The best consequences are those from which the child learns something. If your son is disrespectful to his sister, a good consequence is to tell him he cant use the phone until he writes her a letter of apology. In the letter, he has to tell her what hell do differently the next time hes in conflict with her. Writing the letter of apology Is a learning experience for him that wins him back his phone. That way, hes not Just doing time. Hes completing an act that teaches him something. I think parents have to be very clear about consequences, especially the older kids get. By older, I mean the difference between six and eight and then eight and ten. Im not talking about the difference between eight and eighteen. The older kids get, the more thought they have to put into the consequence. So if a kids grade drops because hes not doing his homework, yes you homework for two weeks. Or until the teacher tells you hes brought his grades back up to a B.Secondly, lets face it. Information isnt Just available to our kids; its injected into them. Their peers, by some adults, and by the media, push bad ideas down our kids throats. Its hard for a parent to keep control of their kids when this is happening and protect them from their own harmful impulses and dangerous outside influences. Your kids honesty becomes the connector between whats happening to her on the outside world and what happens at home. You need her to tell you honestly what happened today, so that you can honestly decide if thats best for her. You need to hear that information in order to decide if thats going to help her meet her responsibilities now and in the future. When parents dont get the right information, theyre afraid theyll make the wrong choices for their kids. When your kid lies, you start to see him as sneaky, especially if he continues to lie to you. You feel that shes going behind your back, that shes undermining you. We begin to think that our kids are bad. We make the connection that if lying is bad, liars are bad. Its Just that simple. Parents should hold their kids responsible for lying. But the mistake parents make is when they start to blame the kid for lying. Its considered immoral to lie. But when you look at your kid like shes a sneak and an operator whos undermining your authority, its a slippery slope that starts with muff lie and ends up at mires a bad person. I think that perception of your kid promotes more lying. If your child thinks you think shes bad, shes going to hide the truth from you even ore, because she doesnt want to be bad. Even though they are lying, kids dont want to disappoint their parents. The lie itself isnt the fundamental problem. You need to discover why your child is lying. Some experts believe that in our efforts to teach our kids not to lie, we overwhelm their capacity to tell the truth. If you give young children a task thats too hard and they fail, theyre probably going to lie, says Hoffman. This happens a lot in school. Kids fail and lie about the results, or they say, Its no big deal. The latter may seem less reprehensible, but its a self-destructive IEEE because those kids suffer not only the humiliation of failing but also the sadness of covering up feelings. The final disgrace is having to endure classmates reactions.Few epithets are more shaming and enraging than the bald accusation, Liar! Also, parenting-advice books often tell you to set a good example for our children by not lying at all, but what Dry. Defaults experiments and our common sense show us is that this is nearly impossible. The real challenge for parents, she says, is negotiating the fine line between having standards and being understanding of the imperfections of human nature. When pointed out to Dry. Default that many parents have a stringent rule We dont lie in this family she responded: What those parents want is for their kids to be perfect. But when a parent is incredibly strict about lying, he creates a situation in which the child is doomed to fail because no human can meet these standards. In fact, she adds, the more the parent says, Were a good family; we dont lie, the more difficult it becomes for kids to own up to their imperfections. Rather than setting the unrealistic goal of abolishing all lies, what makes more sense is to establish what your own familys boundaries should be. How can you help your child be (mostly) truthful? Encouraging truthfulness, modeling it, and rewarding it.By addressing not only the content of the lie but also the lying with dialogue and understanding. According to Dry. Default: What kids need to know is that you want them to try their best to do the right thing. You also understand that no one is perfect. If they do make a mistake, they can come to you and know that you will not castigate them but you will want them to do better in the future. Thirdly, have you ever punished your child in the heat of the moment, when youre angry and set? If youre like most parents, the answer is probably yes. In fact, this is one of the biggest, most common parenting traps that you can fall into. But often when you do this, youre focused on winning the fight rather than working towards teaching your child to choose to do the right thing. Overly harsh punishments do not create regret; they only serve to create resentment in your child. While understandable, that mindset of winning over your child Just isnt helpful. Thats because when you get into that wrestling match, youre playing the wrong role: you become your childs peer ether than his parent. Remember, you already do have authority over him.So dont get engaged in a tug of war-?it will only set up a power struggle. Its important to understand that overly harsh punishments do not create regret; they only serve to create resentment in your child. He will only be thinking about his anger toward you -?and believe that youre unreasonable and unfair. Why doesnt long-term grounding work? This type of grounding is usually interpreted as house arrest-?in other words, the message to your child is something like, Mimi have to be home and you cant talk to your friends. But long-term grounding is not effective in teaching your child the lesson you want him to learn. In fact, James Lehman says that grounding Just teaches kids how to do time and doesnt show them how to change their behavior-? and ultimately, theyre not going to learn the lesson youre trying to teach them. There is no such thing as a magic punishment or consequence that changes behavior. Instead, focus on teaching your child the skills he needs to learn-?and look into why she made the choice to misbehave in the first place. After all, your goal is for your child to make the right choices by herself, even when youre not there. So use consequences to require your child to practice the skill they need to improve their behavior.Understand that consequence given without that focus is Just a punishment that wont teach your child anything new. Heres an example of how you might deal with your child when she misbehaves. Lets say your teenager keeps breaking curfew and you want her to come in on time. 1. Wait: Dont give her a punishment at 1 a. M. When she comes in. Instead, wait until youve calmed down. Sleep on it and talk to her in the morning. 2. Talk: When you do talk, sit down together and say something like, Mimi didnt make t home when you were supposed to last night. Tell me what happened. Your child might say, My friend was upset and she needed to talk. But challenge her reasoning by responding, If your friend is upset, does that mean you get to break the curfew 3. Challenge: When challenging your childs bad choices, always ask a variation of this question: How can you do it differently next time? So in our example, you might say, answer with, l guess I could text you next time and let you know whats going on. You might respond by saying, Okay. Next time, I want you to do that and I will come and get you. You cannot break the curfew rules. So regardless, your responsibility is to get home. 4. Consequences: After this talk, its time to give your child a consequence. James Lehman recommends that you choose something connected to the misbehaver that will encourage her to make better choices. Have her earn back the privilege she lost. So for example, you might say, Because you werent home on time last night, you cant go out with your friends this weekend. And, for the next week, your curfew will be a half hour earlier until you can prove that you can come in on time. Dial back your childs curfew by a half hour that week.If she comes in on time each night she goes out, she can have her old curfew back. That way, your teen is learning good behavior as shes earning back a privilege. By the way, you can and should adjust consequences depending on how serious the behavior was. If what your child did was very risky, then she really is going to need supervision for a while, and there should be a longer earning period. Additionally, another part of the consequence might be, muff have to come home right after school. I get to look at your computer and it will be kept in a public place. You can see your friends but they have to come o our house. So it all depends on the misbehaver. Why is this four-step process so important? If you simply say, muff missed curfew; youre grounded this week, and leave it at that, youre missing out, because you wont get to challenge your teenagers faulty thinking. And believe me, theres a huge amount of reasoning that is faulty with teenagers. Adolescents get in trouble with it all the time. Remember, the important piece is to have that conversation and to make sure your child is learning what she needs to learn. Without that, youre Just trying to mold behavior through punishment ?without teaching your child a new replacement behavior. Lastly, if you find yourself in a situation where youve given your child an overly harsh punishment, dont feel you have to follow through with it. Remember, you are role modeling to your child how to manage yourself when youre angry. Its a fallacy to think that everything that comes out of our mouth as parents is law and if we back down, were seen as inconsistent. Your child can see when youre saying things in anger, and can sense youre being unfair, unreasonable or even ridiculous in some cases.Decisions made n anger are usually wrong decisions-?why lock yourself into them? Youre the parent; youre the teacher. You can say to your child, l was pretty angry when I suggested grounding you for the summer. Eve decided to handle this differently. Then proceed with your problem solving conversation. Let her know what you would like her to do and what consequence decision youve made. This is role modeling a really important lesson for your child. And l said it so Im stuck with it is role modeling that teaches your child that you dont know how to correct yourself when youve been unreasonable.I think you can do this even if you grounded your teen two weeks ago but youve realized you made a mistake. Dont get so caught up in your words. Youre not stuck with them-?they are not set in stone. As a last note, Brenna Harrison had plenty of reasons for doing what she did and she wants to regret it but the back at me for doing what I did and lying to you. Taking my car away to drive back and forth to school only serves to make me dependent on my parents for something I could have taken responsibility for. Taking away visitations with Brandon had nothing to do with lying and everything to do with punishment.I already took the initiative to correct myself but the fact that the parents added unnecessary punishment took away my new responsibility to get my schoolwork done and my new responsibility to go to school by myself on time. The CONSEQUENCE was issued when I would have to go to school four hours earlier and be on time and correct my grades to higher levels. Also, there has been no communication issued with neither teacher nor Brenna about it further. Did you know that I have an A in history right now? And that Spanish will soon follow? Of course not, because you issued a punishment rather than a consequence.

Statement of the Problem Essay Example

Statement of the Problem Essay Steven Brockleyn is a very successful Entrepreneur who has successfully invested into every Market. He has worked with several other Businessmen and has amassed a huge fortune. He is very recognised among fellow Businessmen. Steven is about is about to launch a new chain of Clothes Store and wants to advertise the Shop extensively. On the Day the Store opens he will organise a Party. This Store will have several Celebrities coming to the Opening Party and so there will need to be a Ticketing System organised. He doesnt have the Time to organise this Party nor has he the Time to publicise his Store extensively enough. Steven Brockleyn needs an effective and quick way to publicise his Shop and to arrange a Ticketing System. Steven will allow a lot of Money to be spent however the Event has to be a big success so Steven doesnt lose any Money. I have been recruited to help Steven make the Programmes, Banners, Information Cards and Tickets. We will write a custom essay sample on Statement of the Problem specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Statement of the Problem specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Statement of the Problem specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Steven Brockleyn was originally suggesting that there should be a stand where all the Information Cards will be displayed for Collection, where the Tickets will be sold and the Banners will be displayed by the Stand. Consideration of Alternative Solutions == A Stand could be set up which has all the Information Cards and these Cards will be handed out. A Banner will be publicized and Tickets will be sold from the Stand. The Problem with this Idea is that the amount of People who will receive this Information will not be very substantial. This will be due to the Fact that the Stand can only serve the People that pass the Place and request the Information will have a Chance to receive the Information. The Cards, Banners, Tickets and Programmes will all be hand-made and colour-copied. The hand-made Publications will be very likely to have Errors. The Publications will also look very unprofessional and as Celebrities will be coming to this Event it would be very bad for Steve Brockleyn to use such cheap Methods to publicise this Event. == A Word Processing Program could be used to type up the Programs. The Word Processor will allow easy typing up of the Program and will allow easy making of the Banner. However the Information Cards will be very hard to produce as the Pictures and the size of the Card will be a Problem to print as you will have to order special Business Card Paper which has been sectioned. Also in a Word Processor it will be hard to combine the Pictures and Text in a presentable manner. The Word -Processor will also make it hard to insert Pictures as you have to specify the type of way the Text will Wrap around the Picture and this could make it very hard to insert several therefore it wont allow the Publication to have enough Pictures and so will deter Customers from viewing the Publication in the first Place. ==; A Desktop Publishing Package could be used to easily make the Banners, Tickets, Programmes and Cards. The DPP is very useful for this as it designed especially for Publications like the ones needed. DPPs are also very flexible in their Use; they can be used to word process and to launch Websites unto the Internet. DPPs also have a wide range of Wizards which can help a lot with creating the Publications especially if the maker of the System is inexperienced with using Computers. However DPP isnt suited to typing in large amounts of Text so to type in Text you have to insert a Text Box. This could result in several Text Boxes being needed and this will waste Space on the Page. Justification of Proposed Solution The DPP Choice would be the most intelligent Decision. It is much easier to insert Pictures and to type in Text than a Word-Processor however a DPP interface is much more confusing than the Interface for a Word-Processing Program. Making the Publications by Hand is far too unprofessional and could be very poorly presented. This totally rules it out. The DPP also allows the Publications have several Wizards making it so easy to understand and use the DPP. Word-Processing Programs tend to have more typing orientated Wizards e.g. to type a Letter. The DPP also allows flexibility as to what can be done. You can make a Program using both sides of the Page just by telling the DPP thats what you want. However with a Word-Processor it needs to be done manually i.e. take out the Paper and put it into the Printer reverse side up. User Requirements 1. The Program must include the Address and Opening Times of the Store. 2. The Information Card must not be bigger than a standard Pocket Size. 3. The Cards should be printed an A4 Sheet. 4. The Program should not have Text smaller than 12pt. 5. The Program should not have more than 80 words on each Page. 6. The Ticket must have a Seat Number. 7. The Banner must have Address, Opening Times and Ticket Price printed on. 8. On the Information Card the Details have to be printed in no less than 10pt. 9. The Publications must have the Logo on them in the same place. 10. The Banner should not be longer than 6 Sheets long. 11. The Ticket should feature a Thank-you Message to the Buyer. Analyse Appropriate Software and Hardware Microsoft Publisher is probably the most popular Desktop Publishing Programme; however there are several different Desktop Publisher Packages and each of them have several different advantages that they can be used for. Microsoft Publisher is works best when used with Microsoft Windows and other Windows Applications Microsoft Windows XP will be the most extravagant Operating System we can find at a reasonable Price. Microsoft Windows XP includes Microsoft Publisher XP. Microsoft Publisher XP has a huge variety of Functions compared to other DPPs. Publisher XP is also the easiest to use as the Interface is very friendly. Another Program that could be used is Broderbund Print Shop Deluxe. This is also a DPP but this DPP is meant more for making Birthday Cards, Greeting Cards etc Microsoft Publisher XP is more formal than Print Shop Deluxe and would be the obvious in response to Stevens needs. Pictures will need to be manipulated to be put into the Publications and a Paint Package will be needed for this. There are several Paint Packages that could be used. All the Paint Packages available do the same thing so it wont make a difference which Paint Package is chosen. Microsoft Paint comes free with Microsoft Windows XP. This makes this makes it very easy to get Microsoft Paint as once we have Microsoft Windows installed Microsoft Paint will be installed. Also Microsoft Paint interacts very easily with Microsoft Publisher and uses the same Picture File Types. A Device will be needed to get Pictures of Goods within the Shop. A Scanner could be used or a Web Camera could be used to take Pictures of the Goods. A Scanner wont be very useful in this Situation as to scan you need to already have a Picture. A Web Cam is very unsuitable as it doesnt have enough pixels to allow a good, viewable Image to be seen. A Digital Camera would be the best Option as it has a huge range you can buy and even the cheapest Digital Camera would give you a good viewable Image. A basic CPU will be needed and this CPU would have to be of a reasonable Speed. A Keyboard, Monitor and Mouse will be needed to construct the System. A Laser Printer will be needed to print out the Publication. The Laser Printer will produce a very good Picture and is also very fast. It is however expensive to purchase a LaserJet Printer and the Ink used is very expensive compared to other Ink Cartridges available. Data required and its source The Data required will be Graphics: Pictures of the Goods within the Store. This will be used for mainly to put on the Cards, Banners and the Programme. Graphics will bring in the Audience and will prove the deciding Factor to, potential Buyers of the Product. The Graphics will be obtained from Pictures taken by the Digital Camera. The Pictures taken were of the Goods within the Store. Text Data will also be required as it will provide the Information needed to find the Store, know its Opening Times, to know Ticketing Information etc. The Text Data will come from several Sources including Steven himself. The Text is the most important Data Type needed in the Publication. All the Data needed, will be taken from Steven. Data manipulation The Graphical Data will be manipulated in Microsoft Paint to fit the needs in the Publication. These will be Pictures of Goods within the Store which will be implemented into the intended Publications. The Pictures will be fitted into a Picture Frame which will be predefined before the Picture is obtained. A Logo for the Store will be scanned in and manipulated and copied unto each Publication creating a Uniform Look. The Logo will also be fitted into a Frame which will already be implemented into the Publication. The Text Data that Steven will inform me to write into the Publication will be typed up and if necessary linked Text Boxes will be used. The Text will be typed up using different Fonts for each Piece of Writing. Numerical Data will be used to define Dates, Times and Prices. The Font used will be very different in each Situation. Flow of data Most of the Data that will be needed will come from Steven. Steven will provide the Information which will be put into the Publications; however some of my own Judgement will be needed if there is a small Problem concerning the Publication or an Error by Steven which I can rectify. Using the Data Steven has provided I will make the Publications as close to his Specifications as possible. Then a Copy of the Publications will be sent back to Steven to evaluate. It will then be returned to me with any Corrections necessary being highlighted by Steven. Output All the Publications will be printed out using a Laser Printer; however each will have a different Format therefore require a different Printer Setting. All the Publications will be created using Microsoft Publisher. The Ticket will be printed on A6 Landscape Paper. The Paper used will be ordinary white Printing Paper. The Ticket will be colour printed and then colour printed as the Ticket has to be of a good Quality to reflect the riches of Steven. Colour printed Tickets will also look more attractive to the Buyers. The Banner will be printed on more Quality Paper as less Copies will be made therefore it wont be that expensive. The Quality will allow the colours to be more vibrant and will allow the Adverts to be more productive. The Programme will be printed on normal A4 Paper and will be photo-copied in colour. These programs will be given to all the entrants and will have a lot of Information on them thats why it will be A4 Size. Backup/Security strategy Every Week the System will be checked for Viruses to stop anything happening to the Publications on the Computer. Design I am going to design a Ticket for Entry to the Event. This Ticket will have be landscape on A6 size Paper but will also require a good Design to be printed on it. The Banner will be an A3 size and will be printed in colour. Glossy Paper will be used so it will appear more colourful than the Ticket or the Program. The Program will also be printed in colour. The Banner will be printed on glossy paper in colour and will include Pictures of goods gained by the Digital Camera. The Banner will also have Opening times and Party Information. Breakdown of Solution into Subtasks Make a detailed list of subtasks which will help you to complete the entire system to the exact specification you laid out in your user requirements. Explain how you will meet each requirement you set out to fulfil. Week Activity Week 1 All the digital Pictures will be collected and prepared for use on the Computers. The Computer will be assembled and all necessary Files installed. Week 2 The Designs will be drawn ready to send them to Steven Brockleyn. Week 3 The Designs will be sent off to Steven for Evaluation. He will then send them back with Comments. These Comments will be acted upon. Week 4 Test Plan A FULL and effective test plan should be drawn up which tests every detail of your system. You will have had several things go wrong in designing your system so write them down and include them as tests which you can later on, describe how you corrected them for extra marks. Show what you will test, and give the test data that you will use to test it. Explain what your expected results should be. Where you have used validation, verification or added default values, you should test this to its extreme. Remember: The aim of testing is try your hardest to make your system go wrong! Test Purpose of Test Expected Result 1 To see if Publications are photocopiable. The Publications should come out readable. 2 Implementation Changes to Final Design Make a detailed note of any changes you made to your final designs when you developed the system. Explain why these changes were necessary. You are bound to have made some changes. On the Business Card I added a Picture in the Top to make it more interesting before it was just empty Space. The Picture will be of a Bag and the Bag looks good printed in black and white Evidence of Implementation Print out a copy of everything that you have made. Include all slides, tables, forms, reports, queries, menu screens, formulae, worksheets, leaflets, posters depending on the projects you are doing. Annotate the printouts to show the sequence of development, any errors you found and corrected, and any improvements you have already identified. You could include some earlier drafts of whatever you are doing to show the sequence of development. You will also need to explain any complicated or clever things that you have added. These may not be obvious just by looking at the printouts. Test Results Your test results should include a detailed comparison between the expected result and the actual result. In addition to this you need to include a screenshot as evidence that the test was carried out. The screenshot can then be annotated to further explain anything. Test Purpose of Test Expected Result Actual Result 1 Test to see that a product record can be entered using the Products form Product details should be stored in Products Table. Product details stored successfully in tblProduct. 2 Evidence of Testing Publisher Only: Instead of showing screenshots, you can actually print out your publications and annotate these. Error Correction You WILL have some errors appear in your testing. It is very unlikely that any system will work perfectly first time. You must show screenshot evidence of these errors occurring, an explanation of how you fixed them and more evidence of you re-testing to check that they work after correction. Evaluation Do not let yourself down by rushing this last section. It is worth 121/2 % of your mark and could be the difference between 2 grades. Evaluation of User Requirements Refer to each objective that you wrote in your Identify section and critically evaluate each one separately in a new paragraph. A few lines for each is usually sufficient unless you have something of real discussion for that objective. You do not have to prove that you met all of your objectives or that you have produced the most perfect system but you do need to give a detailed evaluation of how well you met that requirements why you think so or not. User Feedback Your users feedback has to useful, critical comments with some of their suggestions for improvement. This could be in the form of a questionnaire that you compile a letter or some quotes from an interview which you conducted with them. Suggestions for Further Improvement You need to come up with some of you own suggestions for improvement and discuss how these would improve the current system if you actually had the opportunity to make them. You also need to take the users comments for improvement into account as well and discuss how you would implement these if you had the chance.

VARK Analysis Paper

VARK Analysis Paper VARK Analysis Paper VARK Analysis Kristi Hillis Grand Canyon University July 5th, 2015 If we think back to our high school days, we probably can all recall a time of high anxiety. These times are probably associated with tests or papers. We can also recall what study habits we used to help decrease the anxiety. There are several different ways to learn. Everybody has their favorite study habits. After taking the VARK assessment tool, my preferred learning style was determined. My preferred learning style was a combination of kinesthetic and reading and writing. A reading and writing learner is the â€Å"typical† student learner. They learn by reading and taking notes. They take detailed notes and read those notes over and over until they understand the material. Kinesthetic learning â€Å"uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown in pictures and on screens.† (VARK) These type of learners like to move around a lot while they are learning. They do not do well sitting still. This type learns well through experiencing things. This type of learner does well in science classes that have labs associated with them. There several learning strategies that help me learn best. I like to take detailed notes and read over them several times until I am comfortable with what I’m learning. I like to read the textbook material several times if needed to understand the material. I have to have a quiet environment when I am studying or writing a paper. One of my preferred strategies for kinesthetic learning are hands on activities. I learn better if I can try the activity. I use color coded index cards when I take notes. This makes it easier to organize ideas and thoughts. I use lots of examples and stories when I give a presentation. This makes the presentation more realistic to the people in the audience. The use of graphs and charts make learning more enjoyable for me. I like to see the information in the graphs or charts. It makes it easier to understand. I like to take classes that have labs or hands on por tions. I really enjoy science classes that is my favorite subject. I like the challenge of trying to growing specimens in chemistry or dissecting animals in biology. The textbook definition of a read and write learner is â€Å"this preference uses the printed word as the most important way to convey and receive information.† (VARK) This learning style has several different strategies that I do not partake in. I take very detailed notes. However I do not rewrite or use bullet points in my notes. I don’t write my notes in full paragraph. I write them in sentences or I sometimes paraphrase them if there are lot of notes to take. The definition of kinesthetic learning is â€Å"this preference uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown in pictures and on screens.† (VARK) I like it to be quiet when I study unlike listening to music. I do like to write notes on index cards, but I write sentences instead of key words. I do not like to sit in the front of the class. I like to sit in the back. Instead of skimming though the material to locate the main idea, I like to read through the whole section to understand the main idea. When a teacher begins the school year they have a new group of students that they have to teach. They have to get to each and every student. They have to learn how each student learns, and if there are any obstacles that the student might have. By knowing the different types of learning strategies and what works best for these learners the teacher can help the students. A successful teacher

Evolving Practice of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery Models Essay - 2

Evolving Practice of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery Models - Essay Example Moreover, nurses will need to be up to date with emerging health conditions. In the United States, nurses are likely to be faced with various health issues. Some such health issues are the rising level of chronic diseases and ageing population. Moreover, there has been the unprecedented advancement in technology, rise of alternative treatment methods, health policies as well as advances in nursing education and practice (Heller, Oros & Durney-Crowley, 2013). The paper reflects on how the practice of nursing is expected to grow and change as well as a perception of the colleague. There are various ways in which the practice of nursing is expected to grow and change. The growth and change are expected to occur due to changes that are currently taking place in the health sector. The increased progress in health care in the country has led to an increase in average life. For example, it is expected in the next five years; more than 20 per cent of the pollution will be 65 years and older (Heller, Oros & Durney-Crowley, 2013). Increased life expectancy means there will be increased the number of people with health conditions. Such people are expected to have chronic and acute conditions that will overwhelm the healthcare in the provision of efficient and effective continuing care (Heller, Oros & Durney-Crowley, 2013). The underlying issues mean that nursing practice is most likely to change and grow to offer better and continued care. For example, the increased population with health issues means that more attention for the nurse is required. One of the ways of me eting these demands will be offering nursing services in community settings like home care. Such services will help in offering the necessary care needed by patients that cannot be able to visit formal care environment such as hospital due to old age. In addition, such care will help in assessing the ways patients cope in their homes and understand their health needs.

Relations between the Sexes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Relations between the Sexes - Essay Example James Joyce is one of the authors who successfully depicted the relationship between the different sexes in his book titled Dubliners. The book comprises of different short stories, and many of the stories highlight the relationship between men and women in Dublin. In addition, Fritz Lang also depicted the relationship between different sexes in the movie titled Metropolis.   James Joyce authored stories that belong to the Victorian period. Although the book was first published in 1914, James Joyce had been writing most of the stories before that period. Therefore, many of the stories are estimated to have been written in the Victorian period, which spanned between 1840 to early 1900s. During this era, there were distinctive roles for men and women. The Victorian society had societal ideals that defined the relationship between the two sexes. In the story titled â€Å"A Mother†, Joyce tells the story of Miss Devlin, who eventually became Mrs. Kearney after marriage. Joyce introduces us to Mrs. Kearney, who settled down with Mr. Kearney a man older than she was because most of the young men she met did not have the capacity to give her a better life. Joyce depicts her as a perfect Victorian woman in the home setting because she takes care of her homestead, daughters, and husband (Schwarze 2002, p. 67). However, Mrs. Kearney is well educated unlike o ther women of the Victorian era. Joyce introduces the reader to some men in the society who had a lower place than Mrs. Kearney did. From the confusion exhibited by Mr. Holohan, it becomes evident that Mrs. Kearney is more intelligent than him. She is the one who helps him out with organizing his work and determining the right artist for each event. However, Mrs. Kearney respects her husband because she felt secure and protected with him.  Ã‚

College Essay Essay Example for Free

College Essay Essay Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. Black. That is the most dominate trait about me. It is the first thing people notice when they see me. I can change my hair or my clothes, but I will always be black. There are plenty of people who also fit into this category with me: the notorious â€Å"Black Community. † In a word, the black community is diverse. There are the stereotypical black people. The people you hear about on the news. Those who steal, shoot, sell drugs, have â€Å"baby mama drama†, and use the â€Å"N-word† in every other sentence. However, there is another side to this coin. This is where I come in. My role in this community along with the other portion of the black community who are in the same subset as me is penetrating this negative light that is beaming down on all of us. I have never held a gun. I have never stolen anything. I have never laid a hand on any drug that wasn’t prescribed to me or didn’t have â€Å"cold and flu† in the title. I don’t have any kids and I don’t plan on having any anytime soon, and I don’t feel comfortable saying the â€Å"N-word† when I’m by myself, let alone when I’m around other people. All in all, my role in the black community is to prove to everyone else that that one perception does not apply to everyone. The black community is one of many communities that I belong to. This community as a whole is looked down upon, for understandable reasons. However, there are exceptions like me, who demonstrate without a doubt that one general observation does not describe us all. Therefore, I describe the black community as diverse.

Comparing The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy and Turned by Charlotte Perk

Comparing The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy and Turned by Charlotte Perkins Gilman This essay is aimed at discussing the differences between two short stories, called ‘The Withered Arm’ by Thomas Hardy and ‘Turned’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These stories have similar plots and both deliver and contrast these in their very own clever ways. They are both based on the idea of triangular relationships, involving two women and a man. In the story ‘Turned’ there is a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Marroner, and their employee who is a young and beautiful Swedish maid who goes by the name of Gerta. In ‘The Withered Arm’ the relationship is between a lady called Rhoda Brook and a farmer called Farmer Lodge and his wife who is called Gertrude. This essay will discuss the similarities and differences between the two stories and their characters, I will also discuss the language used, and the way the same image is effectively conveyed in the two stories. The author of ‘Turned’ is Charlotte Perkins Gilman who was from a poor background and was born in Connecticut, USA, in 1860. The first story she wrote was called ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ which she wrote in 1892. She then went on to write her best-known book, which was called ‘Women and Economics.’ Gilman was a feminist writer who believed that women had the right to their own independence. This is demonstrated in the character of Marion in ‘Turned’, as she is a clever woman with a degree and has a title of doctor. Gilman published ‘Turned’ in 1911 at the time where issues surrounding women rights was becoming more serious and common. On the other hand, Thomas Hardy wrote his novel ‘The Withered Arm’ with men in the powerful positions. For instance Farmer Lodg... ...ld and frail and died and Farmer Lodge became a kind, caring and thoughtful man! Gertrude died three days later in the town â€Å"Her blood had been turned indeed, too far.† After this Rhoda had lost her friend and her son so she decided to resume where she had started where â€Å"Her monotonous milking at the dairy was resumed.† Farmer Lodge on the third corner of this triangular relationship gave up his farms and became a member of the parish after he overcame his remorse and moodiness. â€Å"He eventually changed for the better, and appeared as a chastened and thoughtful man† To conclude this essay, triangular relationships happen and probably always will happen for years to come. It doesn’t make any difference about what century it happens in or if it is from a rich or poor background because affairs, unwanted babies and complicated relationships are part of life.

Summation of the Virgin and the Dynamo

Ben McAllister English 190 10/4/2010 In Henry Adam’s â€Å"The Dynamo and the Virgin,† he starts to speculate about Christianity’s strength during the medieval times and how it can be related to the twentieth century energy, using the dynamos, that produced electricity. He says when he relates religion and energy,† As he grew accustomed to the gallery of machines, he began to feel the forty-foot dynamos as a moral force, much as the early Christians felt the Cross. By doing this he is explaining he believes the relation between the machines and their parts are just like the Christians being part of the Cathedral and their faith. Therefore, after his relation is given between faith and science, decides he is going to combine the two in his studies, and everything that is considered irrational, he would say it takes faith to believe. He goes on to say how there could never be an American Virgin, since we relate that to sin. As he gets older, continues to sear ch for reasons why the Virgin is still lost in our culture, and he explains it has always been there. He says the Virgin is a force that shaped our Western Civilization, but we had to find her. Word count: 199 Grade: 17/20. Overall, pretty solid here, Ben – the first half of the summation works very well, as you’ve got a clear opening sentence and a pretty clear link to what Adams sees the connection between the two symbols. But, one thing to think about adding here would be less about how Americans see the Virgin, and how of how Adams sees the dynamo – how does he see that symbol as power

Hamlet a Feminist Approach Essay examples - 1224 Words

Hamlet: A Feminist Approach Sexism: the belief or attitude that one sex is inherently superior to, more competent than, or more valuable than the other (most commonly used for male superiority). This idea that women are weak is not a new one in the modern world. It has been studied for countless years along with the concept of a patriarchal society. A patriarchy is defined as a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. Such systems currently exist in several forms and areas around the world; however, the most common place for these patriarchies is in literature. Novels, plays, works of nonfiction, and other forms of literature have shown to either â€Å"reinforce or undermine the†¦show more content†¦Tender yourself more dearly, or—not to crack the wind of the poor phrase, running it thus—you’ll tender me a fool† (31). Here, Polonious clearly shows that he does not care as much as for Ophelia as he does for his reput ation, suggesting that he thinks that women are inferior. In addition, Ophelia’s lack of refusal to being pushed around while submitting to her father’s oppression contributes to her being portrayed as a weak, frail woman. The single response to her father’s lecture on her relationship with Hamlet is â€Å"I shall obey, my lord† (31). She truly has no say in important decisions either. For example, she was asked to spy on Hamlet by her father and Claudius, and no option was provided to say no, simply because it was expected of her to follow the orders of the males present. As Polonius and Claudius spy on Hamlet and Ophelia, Hamlet and Ophelia’s dialogue shows the degradation of females. Hamlet says, â€Å"†¦for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go, and quickly too† (31), describing his disgust and lack of trust for women in marriages, thinking they are all uncommitted deceivers. Hamlet, as the plot progresses, eventually accidentally kills Polonius, leaving Ophelia with no close family and influences left. When she comes to the King and Queen insane, Claudius says, â€Å"Oh, this is the poison of deep grief. It springs all from her father’s death, andShow MoreRelatedFeminism in both Hamlet and Lady Oracle Essay1179 Words   |  5 Pagesworks, Hamlet and Lady Oracle, chart both the life’s course of their main characters and underline the protagonist’s trajectory in some decisive moments of their existence, when both of them, Hamlet and Joan Foster, need to take some decisions which may change their destinies. Marketing and Management Review of Policy Design

Question: Describe the Report for Marketing and Management for the Review of Policy Design. Answer: GOOGLE Google works with great people, the company treats people with respect and offers equal opportunity for everyone (Steiber Alnge, 2013). The company also offers a working environment where people can enjoy the work, and they can respect and help each other. It values diversity among the people and plans. Google always tries to be innovative in the technologies and its products. To solve any problem, Google relates its creativity and the innovative technology. The working culture in Google believes in honesty and integrity. The company always tries to earn the customer loyalty by offering great products and service. The key to the success of Google is to stay in the company norms, clinch innovative ideas from the employees, earn more profits and more. Google has always cared about the communities where they work. It encourages the people to support the local community (Choi Varian, 2012).Google tries to focus on providing the best user experience. It wants to make money in the right way by creating the best product in the market. Google believes in hard work. It also focuses on the areas such as operating systems, hardware products, advertising, platform and others. The next attempt of Google is to reach as many people as possible on the web. They are ambitious with launching new PCs and phone with more advanced technologies. The goal of Google's new products is to make a more advanced web, which gives more personalised experience. Google is definitely doing right while taking Microsoft with its cloud computing features. Through this cloud-computing feature of Google, the Microsoft consumers can access their files and documents from anywhere without being physically present with their device. In 2009, Google launched its first television commercial for Google Chrome, which is an effective alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web Browser (Carlini et al., 2012). Google Chrome has been much more efficient than Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web Browser in terms of its easy accessibility (Carlini et al., 2012). In 2008, Google first launched its Android phone and went head to head with Apple's iPhone (Jonoski et al., 2013). Many critics have praised the benefits of Android over the platform of iPhone. One of the most important things is that Google is openly sourced and backed by multimillion-dollar investment (Blau, 2015). It can improve the design of Android over years. On the other hand, iPhone can only be available on American Telephone Telegraph in the US, where most of the competitors of ATT support Android. In 2010, Chinese Government threatened Google for intrusion and censorship of hackers (Carlini et al., 2012). Therefore, Google has closed its search engine in China and redirect people towards its uncensored search engine in Hong Kong. This decision was an attempt to skirt censorship requirement without maintaining Chinese Law. MICROSOFT Microsoft started off with the first DOS operating system for IBM computers which gave it the initial success. In the next decade, Microsoft expanded its business with the Microsoft Office and Windows operating system (Vishwanath LaVail, 2013).. The company went public and thus it further helped it to increase their revenue. Windows 3.0 sold more than 10 million copies within a span of two years. In the 1990s, Microsoft continuously upgraded its software for the operating system (Vishwanath LaVail, 2013). It marketed the fact that upgrades were necessary It invested in advertising in various magazines that increased its endorsements. The Windows 95 and Windows 98 were great successes. Later in the 1990s, Microsoft launched their browser called the Internet Explorer. It gained great popularity against the prevailing Netscapes Navigator within a few years (Peng, 2013). Microsoft did this by bundling the Internet Explorer in the Microsoft Office. They collaborated with AOL, which incr eased the customer base to another 5 million. During recession, to get back to its former glory, Microsoft marketed the fact that PCs are cost effective. This worked really well with the economic low. The commercials showing people who were proud PC owners helped to gain back customer loyalty and inspired the employees of Microsoft. After the successful run for years, Microsoft hit the low with its buggy and poor performing Windows Vista. The share prices have gone down by 40 dollars (Haider et al., 2016). Apple in this gap came back with various new Mac computers, iTunes, iPhones and iPads. Apples ad campaign showed a creative, easygoing and smart Mac character in contrast to the virus plagued, uptight and geeky PC character. Microsoft used the similar character for its advertisement which boasts about being a PC. This focused on the cost effectiveness of the PCs during the recession. This gave Apple an apt response who tried to slam Microsoft for its problem-prone Vista. It recreated a loyalty base among Microsoft's customers. The employees too felt encouraged and inspired. The downside of this campaign is that it lacked creativity. It has nothing new to offer. It showed the rivalry between the two giants very clearly (Persico et al., 2015). Microsoft used a similar PC character as shown in Apple's ad campaigns. It was a clever move. It hardly required much creativity, and it helped people to weigh their options more clearly. Customers who would see these commercials would definitely understand the difference between the two companies. Thus, Microsoft did a good thing by incorporating Apple's campaign in its own marketing strategy. Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company: JTTS produces various items like handbags, scarves to accessories for home furniture. The home furnishing line consists of armchairs, coffee and dining tables, sofas and lamps. They work with the Thai London based designer Ou Bahalyadhin. JTTS provides the material needed for the Asian themed home decor created by the artist. The home furnishing line is 3- percent of the total business and its exports sum up to 90 percent of the total (Patichol et al., 2014). They also extended their business with a chain of fine-dining restaurant in Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok (Haggblade Ritchie, 2014). They have further extended their silk line by providing customised fabrics to international projects. They collaborated with the American designer, Ed Tuttle to work for projects like Park Hyatt Hotels and Aman Resorts. Particularly Park Hyatt Paris has used more than 9000 square meters of JTTS's furnishing fabric. The Sukhothai, the Regent, the Oriental and the Conrad have to furnish from JTTS. With the booming business background and solid client base, JTTS might have gone a little too far with extending their business. JTTS should have stayed within the silk and home furnishing. Starting a business with the food and beverages industry may not be as fulfilling as their other business. JTTS stands out from the other lifestyle brands because they blend contemporary western designs with the heritage and tradition of Thailand. They raised the Thai cottage industry into a famous lifestyle brand. They are different from the smooth Chinese silk. JTTS silk is more knotty and has a lustrous finish that comes in iridescent choices of colours. It is unsuitable for making clothes but is a great choice for home furnishing. They have very close connections with the weaving community of Thailand, which helps them create the best possible products. The weavers are a part of the organisation that makes it easier for JTTS to control the quality of the products (Roll, 2015). JTTS rely on customer-based exhibitions to create awareness for their product line and upcoming products and collection. Their stores have a homely feeling. They believe that their existing clients will be responsible for sharing favourable words about the brand to others (Patichol et al., 2014). Mass media is most avoided. Being a part of the Royalty of Thailand adds to the brands value. Collaboration with the American and English designers has earned them a different status. Most importantly, the rare amalgamation of Thailands rich tradition and contemporary western designs lends the brand to stand out. Fulla Dolls The Fulla dolls are a substitute for the Barbie dolls in the Islamic countries. These dolls share the similar build like the Barbie dolls but they conform to Muslim lifestyles unlike Barbie. Fulla is dark eyed with olive skin. She has Muslim values. She is a role model for the many young Muslim children (Belkhyr, 2013). These dolls are described to honest, caring and loving who respects her parents. She prefers reading and fashion and does not lie. These are the values the Muslim society wants to instil in their children. Thus, the Fulla dolls targeting the Muslim countries have increased its sales significantly where Barbie is banned. Other dolls like like Razanne and Leila fall short of the undivided popularity enjoyed by the Fulla dolls by virtue of their the marketing strategies (Dunn Dunn, 2016). The popular satellite channels are full of commercials portraying Fulla to be an ideal Muslim girl who says her prayers in the morning, reads books or surprises a friend with a cake sh e baked. They are adequately priced and instantly sold out as soon as they hit the shelves. The downside of this selective marketing is that these dolls share not much popularity in other non-Muslim countries. This is a hindrance in increasing their sales in Muslim-minority countries. Fulla dolls enjoy undivided attention in the Islamic countries. To expand its sales all over the world they can incorporate dolls that are more akin to the western ideals. Fulla does not have a boyfriend in the Muslim countries but they can add one for the western version; NewBoy can create another version of the doll that suits the ideals of the countries they are being sold to. NewBoy should attain an understanding of the markets of the countries and produce their dolls accordingly. To compete with already well established Barbie they could price the dolls lower than Barbie which might attract the customers (Dunn Dunn 2016). They should adopt proper marketing strategies to create as much awareness as possible. NewBoys segmentation policy for Fulla is very selective. The Fulla dolls are manufactured keeping in mind only the ideals of a young Muslim girl. The dolls are highly popular in the Islamic countries because the values attached to it (Saleh, 2014). It only targets the young girls and there are prayer rugs and scarves available for the girls to buy them along with the dolls. The dolls have silverware, luggage and stationary for the young girls to buy. The boys of the same age group are ignored. IDEO IDEO has created many groundbreaking designs which have received immense popularity for big labels like Prada, Nike, PepsiCo, Bank of America and much more (Clarkson et al., 2013). Much of its success can be attributed to the very different approach named as the "design thinking". It is based on "human-cantered methodology". IDEO tries to understand the needs of customers and design the product accordingly. IDEO faces difficulty in designing the products from outside to inside to make it more customer-friendly (Brown Wyatt, 2015). Most of the tech companies start designing from inside out. They have a dedicated team called the human factors that employ various methods to understand what a customer wants. They take pictures and study the experience of the customer. They also conduct behavioural mapping which is a collection of pictures of people of restricted to a certain area like waiting room of the hospital. They also use the method of camera journals. They invite customers to tell their stories narrating their experiences with any service or product. Another factor responsible for its success is prototyping. Throughout the process of designing the design is continuously tested and applied. The experience of the testing is further used to improve the final layout. IDEO has successfully created great solutions for several big names. For example, it redesigned the user interface of ATT to be more user-friendly and intuitive. It helped an apparel-making brand to improve their sales. IDEO employed their designers to shadow a number of women. These women were shopping for lingerie and came up with negative reviews. It was so because they found it difficult to locate the lingerie section as well as the appropriate size. Even the fitting rooms were uncomfortable and small (Johanssonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Skldberg et al., 2013). IDEO suggested them to focus on better fitting rooms, better display and to hire personnel to help the customers find the right size. From all this, it is evident that IDEO excels in its job to understand the needs of the customers better than the companies who employ them. IDEO's greatest achievement is that it solves problems concerning usability of the products and services of its clients. It does not need to create any further awareness for itself (Denning, 2013). It one of the top companies who are known for their innovative designing approaches. The countless awards and success stories of the company precede it. Those who know how to achieve in today's market already are aware of what IDEO is and what it is capable of. References Belkhyr, S. (2013).
